Daugavpils, Latvia. The second-largest city in the country, where 75% of the population speaks Russian. Many carry a passport that labels them, and their children, as "Alien": a legal status for former Soviet citizens born in a country that no longer exists. About 280,000 people in Latvia hold this status today. I photograph Daugavpils because my wife's family lives here. What was first the city I visited on family trips became, over the years, a city I keep looking at.
