My first feature film, directed by David Verbeek. Liling, a young musician in Taipei, returns to her home island when her mother suddenly goes blind. The mother describes a new sixth sense; Liling, on a doctor's advice, tries to name the world in words. The film moves between the neon city and the quiet of the island.
We shot it with a Canon 5D and three lenses, in long days, without much budget, with David ill for part of the production. That turned out to be freeing: it showed me that almost any film can be made with modest tools. I worked with sharpness and blur inside the same frame, which became a way of looking at the film's question of how we reach one another. The Volkskrant wrote that "every shot of Jean Counet hits the target"; Het Parool called it Verbeek's best film.
